Engineering an existing tower

Structure Tone has published a construction update on the renovation of Manhattan’s 47-storey 60 Wall Street, working with Elecor Properties and architect KPF. The October 14 report describes ongoing work rather than announcing that the redevelopment is complete. [1]

The contractor says removing a mezzanine and undertaking major structural alterations required engineered bracing and temporary protection while the rest of the tower remained operational. Constraints above subway infrastructure also changed the glazing strategy: the team developed equipment to install large fire-rated panels from inside the building. [1]

The programme includes refurbishment of 29 elevators and two escalators, plus three new elevators. A large air-handling unit was lifted through a temporary facade opening. Editorial analysis: these details illustrate why tower renewal depends on construction sequencing, equipment access and temporary works as much as the finished architectural design. [1]
