Phased occupation begins

Citi announced on 21 September 2026 that employees had started moving into its redeveloped London headquarters in Canary Wharf. Further teams will relocate during the remainder of 2026, with approximately 10,000 colleagues expected to occupy the tower when the move is complete. This is the reopening of an existing tower following redevelopment, rather than the completion of a newly built skyscraper. [1]

The bank says the redevelopment began in 2023 and describes the project as a $1.5 billion investment. It reports that more than 90% of materials and equipment came from Europe, with UK businesses supplying the majority. [1]

What to watch next

Editorial analysis: Phased occupation makes the handover sequence an important part of a tower refurbishment. For engineering readers, the useful follow-up evidence would be measured energy performance and details of retained structures and replaced services. An opening announcement alone cannot establish the refurbishment’s operational or embodied-carbon savings.
