678.9 metres tall, Merdeka 118 is a mixed-use skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It ranks number 2 among the world's tallest completed buildings by architectural height. [2]
The Skyscraper Center now calls the building Menara Merdeka Maybank. The stable Merdeka 118 slug is retained. Observation-height reports describe different spaces and some visitor facilities have opened later than the tower itself. No observation-deck record is asserted until the operating facility and measurement are confirmed. See source ↗
INSIDE THE ENGINEERING
How Merdeka 118 was built.
Design, structure and construction. Technical sources reviewed 9 September 2026.
High-performance concrete in the core and mega-columns works with three sets of three-storey-deep outriggers. Arup describes a mix combining high stiffness, strength and workability. This allowed smaller structural members while maintaining resistance to wind loading.
A circular cofferdam retained the excavation using hoop action. Its self-supporting geometry removed the need for internal struts or ground anchors. Geotechnical monitoring tracked settlement and lateral movement near Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara.
Samsung C&T and UEM Builders delivered the tower as SUJV. Arup and the contractor co-developed a pumpable concrete mix for high-elevation placement, balancing flow, stiffness and heat of hydration. This made concrete technology central to the construction strategy, rather than simply specifying greater strength.
The slender spire uses a three-dimensional space truss. Aeroelastic wind-tunnel testing established its wind response, and fatigue analysis examined connections under repeated daily wind events. Strength alone was insufficient: vibration and accumulated cyclic damage were explicit design concerns.
: added a visible evidence register and change history. The initial evidence-register release preserved the existing measurements; subsequent corrections appear above.
Existing source decisions and caveats
Observation-deck height and opening status need separate verification.
