ENGINEERING DOSSIER

How International Commerce Centre works

Project evidence, construction records and the limits of what is documented. A named consultant’s role is kept separate from the architect, contractor and local engineer of record.

Foundations shaped by the ground

Arup describes a fault zone beneath the site that made a conventional end-bearing solution problematic. The response used shaft-grouted friction barrettes, transferring load along their sides instead of relying solely on bearing at the base.

Testing before relying on the design

Arup reports five trial piles and tests on four working barrettes. For an engineer, the important connection is between the proposed load-transfer mechanism and measured settlement and capacity, not just the nominal depth of a foundation.

Reading the vertical dimensions

The directory records 484 metres of architectural height and 108 above-ground floors. The highest occupied level has not been confirmed here. Measurement source ↗

Dividing architectural height by floor count would include the crown and any unequal floor heights. It cannot be used as a typical floor-to-floor dimension, a measure of slenderness or a structural design input.
