508 metres tall, Taipei 101 is an office skyscraper in Taipei, Taiwan. It ranks number 11 among the world's tallest completed buildings by architectural height. [2]
Wikidata and the Skyscraper Center agree on 508 m architectural height. The retrieved Wikipedia infobox has conflicting 508.2 m architectural and 509.2 m tip figures, while its lead uses 508 m. The 2005 Wikidata opening claim is replaced with the documented 2004 tower completion. See source ↗
ENGINEERING DOSSIER
How Taipei 101 works
Project evidence, construction records and the limits of what is documented. A named consultant’s role is kept separate from the architect, contractor and local engineer of record.
A core that recruits the perimeter
A braced core, outriggers and perimeter moment frames share lateral resistance. The outriggers allow the widely spaced outer columns to participate in resisting overturning, rather than asking the core to do all the work.
Wind and earthquake demands
Thornton Tomasetti describes wind-informed shaping and seismic detailing of core connections. The suspended damper addresses motion, while the main framing still has to provide strength and stiffness. These are separate engineering jobs.
Who did which work
Thornton Tomasetti identifies its role as structural concept and preliminary design, review of the local engineer’s final design, and advice during construction. This is not the same role as the local engineer of record.
Technical source checked : Thornton Tomasetti: Taipei 101 ↗. This check covers the notes above, not every measurement in the directory.
Basement count does not establish pile depth, founding stratum, bearing pressure or the excavation sequence. Read the engineering guide ↗
Elevator count
Not confirmed
Car count does not establish passenger capacity, speed, zoning, redundancy or peak traffic performance. Read the engineering guide ↗
Construction start
Not confirmed
A start year can refer to enabling works, foundations or the main construction contract. Read the engineering guide ↗
Structural topping out
Not confirmed
Topping out marks a structural milestone; facade work, commissioning and occupancy can follow later. Read the engineering guide ↗
Reading the vertical dimensions
The directory records 508 metres of architectural height and 101 above-ground floors. The highest occupied level has not been confirmed here. Measurement source ↗
Dividing architectural height by floor count would include the crown and any unequal floor heights. It cannot be used as a typical floor-to-floor dimension, a measure of slenderness or a structural design input.
Questions for a deeper technical review
Foundation tests, core and column sizes, construction-stage stability, creep and shortening allowances, wind-tunnel results and facade movement tolerances need project-specific evidence. Their absence here does not imply that the project lacked those studies.
: added a visible evidence register and change history. The initial evidence-register release preserved the existing measurements; subsequent corrections appear above.
